What is it?

Deep Tissue Does not need to be Painful

Muscle and connective tissue are layered on the body. Sometimes “knots”, or trigger points, develop in these tissues and cause tension, pain, or numbness. Deep tissue massage uses slow strokes and specific pressure to address these issues. First, muscles and tissues are warmed so the therapist can move the tissues and work into deeper muscles with the least amount of pain. Then, pressure is applied to areas that the client experiences the problem. Frequent questions- “Is this the spot?” “More or less pressure?” “Does it feel better if I press and hold or if I move over it?”- are asked to see what feels the best to the client. Movement and stretching may also be used to help release trigger points. Pressure and movement help these muscles “release” or “break up” adhesions which alleviates pain. Sometimes trigger points cause symptoms in places other when they are located. For example, trigger points in the lower back and glute area may cause numbness in the thighs, calves, and even feet.

Good for people who experience:

* Specific pain or areas of tension
* Pain in their upper back, neck, or shoulder region- often caused from sitting at a computer, driving, or heavy lifting
* Scar tissue from a healed injury or surgery ( a relaxation or sports massage is better for recent injuries or surgeries)
* Chronic headaches
* Carpal tunnel syndrome or other repetitive strain issues (tennis elbow, trigger finger, etc.)
* Sciatica- numbness in thighs, calves
* Plantar fasciitis- pain and stiffness on the bottom of the foot

WHAT TO EXPECT:

* Oil is used
* Warming of muscles with massage techniques
* Frequent communication with massage therapist about pressure level, direction of pressure, pain relief, and comfort level. I want to make sure I am addressing your pain but that it is not too intense
* Usually focused on a specific area, instead of a full-body massage
* Personally, I don’t think a massage should ever be more painful than an 8/10. I don’t want people jumping off the table or leaving the massage more tense or sore than when they arrived. I have found being specific and slow can achieve better results than “digging in” and being aggressive.
